29TH SEPTEMBER 2001
SCULCOATES AMATEURS 1 V 2 WESTELLA
& WILLERBY
Westella started brightly when Nicky Laughton broke down the right and the
resulting cross was cleared off the line for a corner within the first few
minutes. In the 10th minute Westella had a long throw cleared from
the box
to fall to Andy Outram and his long shot was charged down. Scully's had an
excellent chance to go in front when Drayton was put clear only shoot
wide.
Westella broke the deadlock on the half hour when a long free kick was
sent
into the box which was headed clear as far as Luke Ellis who fired
the ball
back into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.
Scully's hit back almost immediately after they applied a bit of pressure
and drew level after a cross came in from the right and Adamson who was
free
at the far post headed in from close range. Scully's spurned the
opportunity
to go ahead when Drayton was sent clear again but his chip over the
Westella
keeper beat the bar as well.
Westella went 2-1 up on the stroke of half time when Mike Gibson
headed in
direct from a corner.
Westella continued to have chances in the second half and Geoff Herbert
put
Nicky Laughton through, only for Thornton to save in the Scully goal.
Geoff
Herbert himself also had a header cleared off the line. Scully's applied
the
pressure late on but Westella held on for the win and go top of the table.
